The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of the largest English-language standardized tests for non-native English speakers.
- The examination is designed to assess three major competencies — reading comprehension and vocabulary, structure and written expression, and listening comprehension — divided into test sections on reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

The first thing you need to do is log in to https://www.ets.org/toefl.com.html and create an account.
- Once you have created an account, you can view study materials, test schedules and dates, fees, and registration steps.
Plan to take the TOEFL iBT two to three months before your earliest application deadline so your scores arrive at your institution in time.

- The regular online and phone registration deadline closes seven full days before the test date. After that, you will be charged an express fee of US$49.

There are 4 parts within the TOEFL iBT
- Reading Section: includes 3 tasks. There are 50 items. The approximate base time is 30 minutes.
- Listening Section: includes 4 tasks. There are 47 items. The approximate base time is 29 minutes.
- Speaking Section: includes 3 tasks. There are 12 items. The approximate base time is 23 minutes.
- Writing Section: includes 2 tasks. There are 11 items. The approximate base time is 8 minutes.
As the test adapts, test time and items may vary.
The total time of the test is around 2.5 hours. Please allow approx. 2 hours to complete the test, and check-in time is 30 minutes.
The TOEFL iBT test is given on fixed dates, more than 50 times a year.

- You can also retake the test as many times as you wish, but you cannot take it more than once in a 3-day period.
Practicing your English reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills as much as possible will help you feel prepared and confident on test day.

There are only two important things you need to bring with you on test day.
- Acceptable, valid ID with your name, recent photograph, and signature.
- Your registration number
- If you are testing outside your country of origin, you will need to present a passport as the only acceptable ID.
The spelling of your name should match exactly the name printed on the valid ID document you will present at the testing site.
- If this information does not match, you will not be permitted to test, and your test fee will not be refunded.
- You will be required to enter your ID information when you register for the test on the TOEFL website
To receive a refund, you need to cancel your test appointment at least 4 full days before your test date. (For example, if your test appointment is on Saturday, you must reschedule or cancel by Tuesday).
- Refunds are in US dollars, equal to half of the original test fee paid. The balance is retained to cover processing expenses.

Yes, you can retake the test as many times as you wish, but you cannot take it more than once in a 3-day period.
- This applies even if you canceled your scores from a previous test.
- If you already have a test appointment, you cannot register for another date that is within 3 days of your existing appointment.
For TOEFL iBT tests taken on or after Jan 21, 2026, your scores are posted to your ETS account approximately 3 days after you take the test. You will receive an email notifying you that your scores have been posted.
- If you choose to obtain a paper copy of your scores, select that option when you register or at any time until 10 pm, local test center time, on the day before you take the test.
- You will have access to a PDF of your test-taker’s score report that you can download and print.
- As well as up to 4 score reports that ETS will send to the institutions or agencies you designated before you took the test. You can add, delete, or change score recipients until 10 pm, local test center time, on the day before your test. After that time, you will be charged a fee for each score report sent.
- Score delivery time to your designated recipients varies based on how they receive scores, and paper copies are subject to delivery service specifications.
You can send additional score reports to institutions for a $29 fee per institution or agency.
- Score reports can be ordered online in your ETS account on the TOEFL website.
- Designated institutions can’t be changed or deleted after you place your order. No refunds can be made.
